Omega 3 Info

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) - The body needs fatty acids to survive and is able to make all but two of them: linoleic acid (LA), in the omega-6 family, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in the omega-3 family. These two fatty acids must be supplied by diet and therefore are considered essential fatty acids.

Foods high in Omega 3EPA and DHA are found in fish, seafood and fish oils. ALA is found in certain vegetable oils, walnuts, flaxseeds and soy products.

Fish Oil - It comes from the tissue of oily fish and is considered a PUFA (Polyunsaturated fatty acid). These fish come from cold and deep water like sardines, mackerel, herring, and anchovies. Salmon is also used as omega 3 fish oil but it is usually found in shallow water. Researchers say fish found in deep water have fewer toxins. To get around this quality Fish Oil Supplement producers will Molecular Distill the fish oil to remove all contaminants.

Benefits - Fish Oil contains EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) the two most important fatty acids in the Omega 3 fish oil family. Researchers say EPA is good for your heart and DHA is good for your brain. Some Omega 3 supplements are geared toward certain health concerns like heart, brain and depression.

Other benefits of Omega 3 Fish Oil:

  • memory and concentration
  • lowering inflammation
  • lowering cholesterol
  • mood disorders
  • skin and eye problems
  • colon health

Krill Oil - Krill is also an Omega 3 fatty acid and is made from Shrimp-like crustaceans (Shell fish). It contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) plus Astaxanthin which is considered a super antioxidant. The EPA and DHA levels in Krill are not as high as Fish Oil but do contain an antioxidant not found in fish oils.  Your body can absorb Krill oil faster and more efficiently then fish oil.

Flaxseed - Flax is a vegetable based Omega 3 that is best eaten by grinding up the flaxseeds and putting them into your foods (like cereal). You can also take flaxseed oil supplements. It contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) fatty acid and its benefits are similar to Fish and Krill Oil. It’s an anti-inflammatory (Cardio) and very high source of Lignans (antioxidant like). Other benefits are for blood pressure and glucose levels.
